Enduring Academic Gains Through Neuroscience (EN)

Description:

Gemm Learning provides on-line, home-based learning and reading software with remote educator guidance.  Using the evidence-based, adaptive neuroscience program called Fast ForWord, we help children, teenagers and adults develop and strengthen the cognitive skills necessary to improve language, literacy, and other academic competencies.

The program is an oral language and reading intervention program that addresses memory, attention, processing speed and sequencing skills and uses gamification strategies, deliberate practice and real-time corrective feedback.  Developed by four renowned research scientists in 1996, the program is now adopted in more than 40 countries and uses breakthroughs in brain plasticity to train the brain to develop increased processing speed and reading skills. Most important is that these changes are enduring.

Gemm is based in Westport, Connecticut.  Everyone in Gemm Learning is either an educator or has a child who had learning difficulties. Our program staff are educators who have seen the limits of instruction and tutoring first-hand, and so love being able to offer a new window of opportunity to struggling learners. Their insight into activity at home involves them in a personal way that leads to great outcomes. We work with students of all ages who struggle with reading and comprehension, as well as learning difficulties including dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, ADD-PI, language delays, autism and Asperger syndrome.

Speaker: Delphine (Deli) Marden has been with Gemm Learning for 13 years and is the Director of Education.  As a child, Deli was diagnosed with dyslexia and auditory processing disorder and knows firsthand the challenges that many students face when learning to read.  This experience laid the groundwork for Deli to pursue a Masters in Education and advocate for students who face similar academic obstacles.   She is able to provide a unique perspective to our families and example to our students that with the right approach, they will improve.  Deli coaches her daughter’s youth soccer team and spends the rest of her free time outside with her family and the pets.
